Are Detour Products Safe For kids?

From a health and nutrition standpoint, our Detour products are very safe for children that are at least five years of age. Children should typically use our smaller size bars that have around 12 -15 grams of protein in them. You should always check our ingredient labeling to identify any ingredients that may be of interest to you from a nutritional and health standpoint and consult a qualified health professional with specific questions as they pertain to you.

How Much "Soy Protein" is In Our Products and Do We Have Any Products Without "Soy Protein"?

Whey protein is the predominant source of protein in Detour Original, Lower Sugar, Oatmeal, and Lean Muscle bars. These bars contain small amounts of soy protein and in some cases soy has been used as a processing aid in the manufacture of some of the minor ingredients. The predominant source of protein in our all natural Detour Runner, Biker, and Yoga bars is soy protein. You should always check our ingredient labeling to identify any ingredients that may be of interest to you from a nutritional and health standpoint and consult a qualified health professional with specific questions as they pertain to you.

How Do I Calculate The "Net Carbohydrates" In Detour Products?

Counting net carbohydrates is based on the premise that certain carbohydrates contribute to increased blood glucose (sugar) levels, while others do not. Low carbohydrate diets (such as the Atkins diet) consider fiber, sugar alcohols, and other such carbohydrates to be "non-impact carbohydrates," meaning that our bodies can't metabolize or use them, so they simply don't count. Net carbohydrates are calculated by taking total carbohydrate grams and subtracting from those any indicated fiber or sugar alcohol grams. The remaining carbohydrates are considered the given product's net carbohydrates. While FDA labeling rules do not require identification of the sugar alcohol content of food products, we have recently added this information to our Lower Sugar and Lean Muscle products in response to consumer request. We hope this additional information is helpful in selecting the Detour product that is right for you.

If The Detour Product I Purchased Has Exceeded It's "Enjoy By Date", Can I Still Eat It Or Will It Make Me Sick?

All of our Detour products contain an "Enjoy by Date" or "Enjoy Thru" on the packaging. It is normally in the format of a three digit month, a two digit date and a two digit year (Example – January 01, 2010 would appear as JAN 01 10) or a three digit month and four digit year (Example – JAN 2010). Consumer use of the product before that date will result in the consumer getting our product at its very best.

We recommend our customers enjoy our product at its optimum quality and we do not recommend purchasing product after this date. Consuming properly stored product somewhat past the "Enjoy by Date" will not necessarily produce any kind of health safety issue or any type of illness. In general, the products flavor, taste and appearance will change slowly through time and sometime after the "Enjoy by Date", as with any food, spoilage (rancidity, etc.) will eventually occur.

How Does Detour Assure The Ingredients They Use In Their Products Are Safe For Their Customers?

We apply the following quality assurance program elements to assure our Detour products are of the highest quality and safe for ourselves as well as our customers:

In general, all Detour bar ingredients are purchased typically through U.S. ingredient suppliers and brokers who have programs in place to certify the quality and safety of their ingredients. Our ingredient suppliers are normally U.S. owned companies who manufacture, purchase or import ingredients for sale in the U.S. In some cases, the ingredient suppliers actually own the manufacturing operations producing the ingredients. All food ingredients purchased from any source require a Certificate of Analysis (COA) signed by a technical or quality representative from the manufacturer to be included with the shipment as part of our ingredient receipt inspection process. We also request a certificate of origin from our ingredient suppliers.

The requirement for a COA is also a critical control point in our Hazards Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program which identifies to us those processes that require special attention from our quality staff and our manufacturing facility management.

Forward Foods randomly tests and independently inspects ingredients on occasion to confirm they meet our quality and safety requirements. In addition, Forward Foods inspects and tests any ingredients that are identified in any manner as suspect during the receiving inspection, production processing or final product testing performed during the manufacture of its products. Based on their quality track record and performance, ingredient manufacturers may also be periodically selected to receive quality audit and / or supplier qualification verification from our quality group.

Where Are Detour products Manufactured?

All Detour products are manufactured in manufacturing facilities that have been approved for use by the Forward Food Quality Assurance staff which report directly to our CEO. This approval includes a review of the facility’s product quality history, its capability to manufacture our products to our standards and a series of independent audits and product trials designed to assure the facility meets all FDA good manufacturing practices and regulations. These facilities are required to be independently audited each year by a nationally recognized independent auditor such as Silliker Laboratories, Cook and Thurber or the American Institute of Baking (AIB). These audits provide an additional level of confidence to our management and our customers that our products are manufactured in accordance with all FDA good manufacturing practices and nationally recognized industry product quality and safety standards. Above average performance and success in these audits is mandatory.

Do Our Detour Products Contain Gluten?

Most of our products do not contain added gluten. Those that do contain gluten (like wheat protein) in some form, as a basic ingredient, have their gluten content clearly identified in their ingredient labeling. Unfortunately, many ingredient suppliers do process gluten along with other ingredients in their facilities. As such, we are always concerned that small trace quantities of gluten could be in our products due to the potential of cross-contamination occurring during the ingredient supplier's processing activities. Though the amount of gluten contamination may be very small, the FDA and other health safety organizations have not been able to agree upon a low level of gluten concentration that might be considered safe from a health safety standpoint. As such, at this point, we have no products which we feel we can safely certify to our customers as 100% "gluten free". In the future, dependent upon the progress made by the FDA and other health safety organizations in setting standards for minimum gluten content, we may develop some products specifically designed to answer this growing consumer need.

Why Do Some of Our Detour Products Have Hydrogenated Oils In Them and As Such, How Can We Claim They Are Trans-Fat Free?

We recognize that people would prefer not to have hydrogenated oils in their products and we have started to replace the small amounts that do exist in such a way that it doesn't impact our great taste profiles. The amount of the oils used in our products and their degree of hydrogenation is very small. In fact, due to the very small amount of hydrogenated oil in our products, the amount of trans-fat contained is well below that required to be indicated by anything but "zero" by existing FDA regulations and initiatives. You should try our new Detour "Activity" bars (Detour Biker, Runner & Yoga). They have our great Detour taste, are formulated to promote enhanced activity performance, contain no hydrogenated oils, and are all natural.

What Are The Difference Between Hydrogenated Oils and Fractionated Oils?

Hydrogenation is the process of adding hydrogen to the bonds of vegetable oils to convert them to solid fats and control their melting point. Hydrogenated fats have less susceptibility to slow oxidation, which would cause them to turn rancid. Fractionation is the process of physically separating the glycerol and fatty acid components of fat molecules and using various portions or combinations to control the melt point and mouth feel of the product.

If I AM Lactose Intolerant, Can I Eat Detour Bars?

Detour bars are predominantly dairy-based from whey protein. On a percent basis, the bars are 99% lactose free and should be suitable for most anyone with lactose intolerance. You should always check our ingredient labeling to identify any ingredients that may be of interest to you from a nutritional and health standpoint and consult a qualified health professional with specific questions as they pertain to you.

Do any Detour Bars contain Maltitol?

Our Detour Lower Sugar and Lean Muscle products do contain small amounts of Maltitol in their coatings and layers. This is necessary to achieve the levels of sugar content demanded by our customers who need a great tasting lower sugar high protein good tasting product to meet their health and dietary needs

It is unlikely the small amount of Maltitol contained in these Detour bars will cause any stomach distress in healthy individuals. In fact, one clinical study has showed that both regular and occasional consumption of Maltitol showed no difference on severe digestive symptoms when compared to regular table sugar (sucrose). What is the source of the gelatin in Detour products and why is it used? Which products do not contain gelatin?

The gelatin we use is made from both porcine (pork) and bovine (beef) sources. For those leading active healthy lifestyles, gelatin helps support joint cartilage and promotes ligament and tendon stability. We also use gelatin to achieve the moist, chewy texture of the bar and to prevent the bars from becoming too hard over their shelf life. Detour Activity bars do not contain any gelatin ingredients.
